ECONOMY

MANUFACTURING


In 2010, manufacturing provided $17.9 billion to Maryland's gross domestic product, up from $16.7 billion in 2009.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2010 Economic Census, the highest employment was in the computer and electronic products industry (21,655 jobs), the food manufacturing industry (14,280 jobs), and printing and related activities (12,566 jobs). With total value of shipments of manufactured goods in 2010 at $39.9 billion, total annual payroll by Maryland manufacturers was $6.1 billion paid to 106,807 workers.

In 2009, Maryland manufacturing was led by computer and electronic product manufactures ($4.3 billion), chemical manufactures ($3.4 billion), food, beverage and tobacco manufactures ($2.9 billion), and fabricated metal products ($1 billion).
